Sky & BT wait to see who's landed new EFL TV rights deal

Sky Sports and BT Sport bosses are nervously waiting to see who has landed the next set of live TV rights for the EFL.

Both have lodged bids for three separate packages of rights which could also include the newly-named Carabao Cup, formerly the EFL Cup.

Sky currently hold all the live rights up until the start of the 2019-20 season when the new deal would come into place.

ITV are also thought to have bid for some rights, possibly in partnership with BT. Channel 5 - which currently holds the highlights package - and Channel 4 are believed to have shown an interest too.

With the packages split, there remains the possibility of three separate broadcasters securing rights meaning potentially both Sky and BT could both show live games.

The EFL had previously lumped all matches in one package, but for the new rights tender broadcasters can bid separately for weekend games (Friday, Saturday, Sunday in a package which also includes all the play-offs), midweek matches and the Carabao Cup package.

More games than ever will be made available under the new deal with up to 324 games a season being shown live, up considerably from the current 112. The prospect of midweek games all being simulcast - as BT currently does with the Champions League - is also in the deal.

The EFL declined an option it has to extend the current Sky deal beyond it expiry date at the end of the 2018-19 season, but decided to put the rights to the market instead.

An announcement on the new rights is expected possibly this week.
