Sky set to retain live EFL TV rights in mega deal

Sky Sports are reported to have retained their exclusive live rights to EFL matches after seeing off BT Sport.

The Guardian reports that Sky has clinched the deal at double what it's paying now in a contract which could be worth up to £900million over five years.

If Sky go for a full five-year deal - which is currently being negotiated in what the Guardian say are now "exclusive talks" after the bidding process was completed - it means live EFL football will remain on the broadcaster until 2024.

More games than ever will be made available under the new deal with up to 324 games a season being shown live from 2019-20, up considerably from the current 112.

The prospect of midweek Championship games all being simulcast - as BT currently does with the Champions League - is also in the deal.

The Guardian also suggests that Channel 5 will loose its highlights rights with the EFL as part of the same rights process. It says ITV are favourites to land the highlights package.

Neither BT or Sky have commented while the EFL told SportsPro it would not comment "until the tender process has been completed and the required approvals have been secured"
