Sky Sports agrees new five-year EFL TV deal

Sky Sports has won the rights to continue showing live EFL matches in a deal which will see more games screened than ever before - including EVERY midweek Championship game.

The new five-year deal will start from the 2019-20 season (when Sky's current deal expires) and also includes live rights to matches from the every round of the Carabao Cup and the later stages of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Under the deal Sky will show:
> A total of 260 games a season from EFL competitions.
> Up to 150 live and exclusive EFL games a season (including at least 20 League One and Two matches a season).
> EVERY Championship midweek game (Tuesday and Wednesday) will be shown (80 in all) - 16 of those will be shown on the main Sky Sports Football channel, the others will be available via the red button and other interactive Sky service (those not on the main Sky channel will also be streamed by official club websites).
> ALL 15 play-off games (including the final) from all three divisions.
> 15 games a season (including the final) from the Carabao Cup.
> the semi-final and final of the Checkatrade Trophy.

The EFL says the deal is worth in total £600million, an increase of 36 per cent per cent on what Sky are currently paying.

It's thought BT Sport bid for the rights as well and the new deal means Championship games will now be shown live on Sky at the same time as Champions League matches on BT Sport.

The deal also allows for EFL clubs to screen their non-3pm Saturday matches via their own websites - providing it's not being shown live as one of Sky's exclusive matches on its main channels.

The EFL has yet to announce who has secured the rights to show highlights of matches, but it's believed Channel 5 has retained the contract.
