The Premier League LIVE on Amazon Prime - all you need to know

There are three Boxing Day Premier League games being shown on Sky this year, but fast forward 12 months and EVERY game will be available this time next year.

They won't be on Sky or BT, but instead through Amazon's Prime TV service.

The Boxing Day matches will all be streamed live by Amazon after they clinched two small packages of live games as part of the new TV deals which start next season.

It's not clear yet whether Amazon will show all ten festive fixtures at 3pm or - the more likely scenario - of staggering the games with lunchtime, afternoon, tea-time and evening fixtures.

The other package it has secured will see it show every game from the first December midweek round of fixtures. The games are likely to be split evenly between Tuesday and Wednesday night with five screened on Amazon each evening.

The two packages mean Amazon have only secured 20 matches a season, and those are from just two rounds of matches a season in the same month.

Add to that that Sky in the same three-season period have secured more live games than ever before including EVERY weekend round top pick, that BT Sport will have more matches than ever (albeit not as attractive picks as in the past) and you might wonder what all the hype about Amazon's seemingly slim Premier League pickings is.

Well, it's really more what it might lead to in the future. Firstly, for Amazon the big plus of having two entire rounds of December fixtures is a fantastic draw for adding Prime subscribers in the Christmas sales period.

Prime will be shouting from the rooftops that not only can you get next-day free delivery on Amazon purchases with your Prime subscription you also can now get top live football in addition to all the other film and TV shows available to stream through the package.

Canny fans will find that they won't shell out a penny if they take up Prime's Premier League offer for the first season. Amazon offer a free 30-day trial for new Prime subscribers meaning if you sign up at the start of December you'll get both rounds of fixtures without paying a penny and you can cancel no-obligation at the end of the month.

Even if you do pay you could just pay for one month's Prime in December then cancel.

But Amazon will be banking on you liking the overall Prime benefits (on top of the TV service) so much that you won't be cancelling.

And if that happens in big enough numbers on the back of just two rounds of Premier League games, Amazon could be back when the next set of rights go up for auction in three years' time with a much more ambitious plan to challenge Sky and BT.

Likewise could successful streaming of two entire rounds persuade the Premier League to do that for every match round which under current rules would mean an end to Saturday 3pm Premier League kick-offs. Some other European league stagger their games over far more slots than the Premier League do to maximise TV revenue.

They may only be baby steps with just 20 games from next season for Amazon, but the tech giant's entry into the market could lead to a huge change in how we watch the world's biggest football league.
